Importance of micronutrients for dentistry

Importance of micronutrients for dentistry

06.02.2025

Our diet has changed drastically in recent decades.

Depleted soils, long transportation routes and modern processing methods have led to a sharp decline in the content of valuable vitamins and minerals in fruit and vegetables. Today, we would have to eat around ten times as much fruit and vegetables to achieve the same nutrient content as 50 years ago. Micronutrients play a key role in dental health in particular.

The “Fantastic Four” for strong teeth and bones

Vitamin D3 - the sunshine vitamin Strictly speaking, vitamin D3 is not a vitamin, but a hormone that goes far beyond bone health. It promotes calcium absorption in the intestine, activates osteoblasts (cells for bone formation) and inhibits osteoclasts (bone resorption cells). It also strengthens the immune system and supports healing after dental procedures.

Sources and supply: 80 % of vitamin D3 is formed in the skin through UV-B radiation. However, due to our predominant stay in closed rooms, clothing and sun cream, production often fails to take place. Supplementation is therefore particularly advisable in the winter months or when levels are below 40 ng/ml. Daily doses of 1,000-10,000 IU are recommended, depending on requirements.

Vitamin K2 - the bone manager

Vitamin K2 ensures that calcium is transported to where it is needed: the bones. At the same time, it prevents deposits in blood vessels, thereby preventing cardiovascular disease. Together with vitamin D3, it unfolds its full effect and is essential for the healing and maintenance of teeth and bones.

Sources: Vitamin K2 is found in fermented foods such as natto, cheese and yogurt. It should be taken in a ratio of 100 µg K2 to 10,000 IU D3.

Vitamin C - the guardian angel for teeth and tissue

Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and promotes collagen formation, which is essential for elastic gums and strong connective tissue. It supports the healing of inflammation and has an immune-boosting effect. Sources: In addition to citrus fruits, acerola cherries and peppers provide high amounts of vitamin C. A daily dose of 1-3 g is recommended, especially before and after operations.

Magnesium - the all-rounder

Magnesium stabilizes cell walls, supports vitamin D activation and is important for energy production. It relieves muscle cramps and ensures the balance between calcium and vitamin D in the body. Sources: Almonds, pumpkin seeds and wholegrain products are rich in magnesium. A daily dose of 300-400 mg is optimal.

Omega-3 fatty acids - anti-inflammatory and cell protectors

These essential fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect and promote wound healing after dental procedures. The omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA, which are found in fish oils and algae, are particularly important. A healthy ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 should not exceed 3:1.

Vitamin A - for strong mucous membranes

Vitamin A protects the mucous membranes and ensures their immune function, which is particularly important for dental diseases such as periodontitis. It is found in animal products such as liver and eggs.

Conclusion: Micronutrients for a healthy oral cavity

An adequate supply of micronutrients is crucial for dental health and the entire body. The “Fantastic Four” - vitamin D3, K2, C and magnesium - as well as omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin A support bone formation, strengthen the immune system and promote healing. A targeted supplementation of these nutrients can significantly improve the success of treatment, particularly in the context of dental procedures.
